Worked on creating some green energy with dad using our small creek to turn a small motor/generator. We had some success and are going to keep tweaking it until we get some steady power.

Yahoo Answers For Water Wheel Generator
Question Is there a formula that I can use w\ a water wheel & generator that would tell gallons p\ minutes to kilowatts?

Best Answer You can get a rough idea from the head of the water and the flow. Lets say for a small one, the flow is 20l/s (that is 5.28 US gallons at 3.7854 liters to the US gallon). Make the head (the distance the water falls to/through the turbine = 3m. First convert the flow per second to mass: 1 liter is 1kg close enough. There are 20kg/s Now calculate the power produced. Power_W = (Mass_kg x Gravity_m/s/s x Height_m) / time_s = (20kg x 9.8m/s/s x 3m) / 1s = 588W. Allow for the generator is 80% efficient and the water wheel (including gears) is 50% efficient: P = 0.8 x 0.5 x 588W = 235W Energy produced in one hour = 235W x 1h = 235 Wh. Lets look at a bigger one: Assume 1000l/s, 50m head P = 1000 x 9.8m/s/s x 50m/1 = 490,000W Allowing better efficiency at this size, 90% for generator and 75% for turbine/gears etc. P = 490kW x 0.9 x 0.75 = 330kW Energy in one hour = 330kWh. The link below shows some calculations for the size and efficiency of a water wheel, and how to convert velocity into head. Note that the essential gearbox is likely to be only 50% efficient depending on the ratio. Turbines like propellers can increase the RPM, so potentially the efficiency is higher if for no other reason than the gear ratio is less.
Question How can I connect a wooden water wheel to a bicycle generator to produce electricity?
Please help me. We planned to make our science investigastory project - "water turbine". Our problem is, how can we connect the water wheel to a bicycle generator? please help us bec. we have no idea. Anothewr problem is - how can we connect the socket to the bicycle generator to hav electricity? ty-

Best Answer A belt drive would work. You will need to run the generator faster than the water wheel; that can be done with two pulleys and a belt.
Question water wheel generator designs ?
how does a water wheel (the kind you see that picks up water and causes motion)work . my basic design is to have a mini water wheel with a spoke in the middle attached to a gear that moves another gear turning the main generator rod to produce electricity

Best Answer There are two basic kinds of water wheel. The first kind is a paddle wheel that has it's bottom edge dipped into flowing water that doesn't really change level. The second kind is a bucket wheel. On this the water comes out of a spout at the top of the wheel. The change in elevation means more energy is transferred per amount of water. Power plants use a type of turbine, essentially a fan in a tube of water.
