Question If I discovered magnetic monopoles, how will I have "broken the barrier for perpetual motion"?
I asked a question about magnetic monopoles and the answerer told me if I did, I will have "broken the barrier for perpetual motion and solved all of our energy concerns"? In what ways? Please explain. Thanks. I don't think I will ever win a noble prize for this, but I'm just curious: how would this be such a momentous discovery?

Best Answer Presently, magnetism is often described as due to the spin of an electron. If one electron spins in one direction, it will become a north-seeking pole and vice-versa. The monopoles are hypothetical, and they are predicted by GUT (Grand unification theory) and String Theory. I don't see how magnetic monopoles will "solve all our energy concerns". Probably, there must be some failed perpetual motion generator that failed because a magnet has two poles. Or perhaps the magnetic field of the monopole is stronger than many electromagnets, such that it can be used in generators. However, the discovery of the monopoles will first indicate that another fraction of the Grand Unified Theory is correct. Another thing is that our present theory of how a magnet has a magnetic field will change, and a new theory has to be thought of for the reason why when a magnet is cut into two the two small pieces will still have a north and south seeking pole. Another theory must be able to explain why the monopoles are hard to detect. You might want to do further research on this topic...
