ok... say i hooked an electrical generator up to a motor so that the motor would spin the generator to make electricity... now say i made it so that the electricity output from the generator powered the motor and then this would just go on and on and on... is that perpetual motion? if the power output wouldnt be enough to power the motor to make the machine go forever, then couldn't you just do that thing where you put a small gear next to a big gear, and then the small gear spins really fast? have people done this before? i mean... if it works then why wouldn't we use this to power the world!!! like gosh!!! one for each house (or 10 whatever it takes..) i mean free power!!! Best Answer The second law of thermodynamics says that no matter how much pwoer you put into a motor, you will never get as much out. Even if you connected it up to a gear system, by speeding up the spin, you lose the torque (and some energy is lost as heat) so it wouldn't be able to spin a generator with as much force. So no, this does not work. I know people who have tried this. It failed them. You simply will not get enough energy out of a motor to generate that same amoutn of energy on any possible generator.

Best Answer The problem is that the term 'perpetual motion' has changed its meaning somewhat. It has come to mean a system from which you can extract energy without having to put energy into that system. There's no particular (Newtonian) objection to the idea of shooting an object off into deep space with as much kinetic energy as you care to give it and expecting it to keep going. The trouble is that if you try to use any of that energy, then *you* are the thing 'influencing' it and slowing it down. There's no unlimited energy there I'm afraid.

Solar power is about as close as you can get, along with careful consideration in how the structure is built to minimize its requirements of power.Things like building a subterranian dwelling will keep the structure in a closely confined temperature range, thus to begin with you would have a 'known' in the requirments for energy to keep a constant temperature. A simple solar hot water heater can be constructed by anyone out of common items for Home Depot. Water can be brought to a temperature of 180° just with direct sunlight. That water could be put to a lot of uses besides just having scalding shower capabilities. Wind energy would be a great supplement with the solar, and even wind can be generated from the heat the sun provides. What you would like to accomplish is not all that difficult and need not be all that expensive IF the entire structure is planned. Currently we are trying to adapt these same technologies to 'unfriendly' structures and some good success is being experienced regardless of this haphazzard approach. Starting to build with the goal of self sufficient desire makes everything quite attainable. Naturally any system would need to have 'back up' capability to supply essential power requirements at times the environment would not allow the solar/wind generation to function. Battery power is he first thing most would think of, but ancient technology could provide very efficient energy sources as well. An example is a methane generator. In its crudest form, nothing more than a pit where garbage is placed and left to decompose (rot). A perfectly natural process that provides a natural gas for burning. Anything from a gas stove for cooking use to a steam power plant to generate electricity is little more than putting a system in place.

Here is what I was thinking. It's possible that companies like Exxon Mobile would receive less profit by the spread of alternate energy therefore causing the loss of 30% of the workforce. So if they employ about 150, 000 workers, that's 45, 000 lost jobs. So here's what I have: A 6" cart has a hole in the middle of it lengthwise. There is a coil of copper wire going around that hole. The cart is suspended by magnets on a circular track that has been heavily magnetized. Also inside the cart is a small electric toy motor and a wheel that protrudes from the side of the cart. Inside of the larger magnetized track is a small, non-magnetized track that the wheel can use to propel the cart around the track. If I give the cart an initial push, would I get enough voltage and power from magnetic induction to run the electric motor? The motor is made to be run with a AA battery with 1.5 volts. Would this work, and how can I optimize this so I could get it to run by itself for as long as possible?

Best Answer I see what you are trying to do, and as an experiment, it could be instructive. But ...well, while I do not want to be a kill-joy, there is a problem with the design. No matter how perfect the design, you will always lose a little efficiency in the generation of the electricity: you will get friction, eddy currents, heat and so forth. And so, not even considering the loss of energy in the driving motor, or the loss to air resistance or friction, you will always lose energy in the process of converting kinetic energy to electrical energy. You are using kinetic energy to power the generator, and that energy is coming from the momentum of the car. That means that the generator itself will reduce the momentum / speed of the car. And it will not produce enough energy to 'replace' that momentum. The reality is that your most efficient design would be to omit the generator - motor concept entirely. Supporting the car on a magnetic field, however, can be a very effective way of minimizing friction.

The are life size beasts made of pipe and they do move but they are powered by a novel form of wind power (so they appear to be perpetual motion machines.)
