Question Why is it not possible for perpetual motion motors?
based solely on magnets, I dont see how this is different than using electromagnets which would work.

Best Answer Electromagnets can be turned on to attract a permanent magnet in a specific direction of rotation and turned off when they pass the permanent magnet to prevent them from being pulled back in the opposite direction. Permanent magnets only in a rotating device, unfortunately, cannot be turned on and off and will simply oscillate for a short time until they reach equilibrium and no further uneven forces are present. As I type this, there's no doubt in my mind that many people are working on prototypes and different designs to prove me wrong - but they will not have to prove me wrong, they will have to prove some very basic physical laws concerning the conservation of mass/energy wrong, and that's extremely unlikely.

You see, entropy is the result of the passage of time in a sense and the only way according to relativity to go back in time is to travel faster than light which is impossible due to inertial mass. There is a speed of light for a reason. Try pushing a cart from 0 mph to 10 mph; it accelerates pretty quickly, but it becomes increasingly difficult the faster you go and it takes an infinite amount of energy to accelerate a mass to the speed of light and infinite energy is impossible. So it's impossible to go at the speed of light with a mass let alone faster than light. Therefore time travel to the past is impossible, and therefore reversing entropy is impossible because entropy is a function of time in a sense. This may all seem irrelevant, but it is completely relevant and helps you to have a better understanding of why perpetual motion is impossible. A concise explanation would be that perpetual motion is impossible due to entropy. *All* of the supposed "perpetual motion machines" operate by the transference of motion and therefore do not violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Perpetual motion machines are an illusion. EDIT: The link that "NTH IQ" posted to the "perpetual motion" machine isn't a perpetual motion machine at all, this machine again operates on the transference of motion.

Would something that could never(at any scale) make effect power to be cost effective really change anything? Or would it just be another cool toy?

Best Answer Your "thought experiment" does not have to be perpetual motion. Suppose the same idea but it extracted almost all the energy from a mass. Remember E=MC². So if you put in 1kGm of scrap mass and it could produce a few watts for years what uses would it have? First space travel, cost is of (almost) no object there. A few watts will operate most space probes and many satellites. Military uses also. Again high cost can be acceptable. To produce use for you home would be more difficult. Cost matters here. kWHrs of electricity costs the consumer only pennies. You unit might have to run it for years to break even. Would you pay $1000 (or you local equivelent) if it took 5 years or more to break even? How about 10 years? What if it was $5000 and 5 years?

For example: http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm/subsection/1 You can generally find them by googling things like "magnetic toy" "perpetual toys", etc. This one is a radiometer; it uses momentum from sunlight to rotate a low friction rotor. There are also neat ones that use water or batteries. Of course, these "perpetual" machines are not really perpetural. They are just using a clever or hidden power source. No such thing as a real perpetual motion generator, though lots of people have spent lots of money trying to get one (most of the money was scammed from investors).

Best Answer perpetual motion is a concept that a machine, wheel or what ever will continue in motion forever from the initial energy that is input. perpetual motion cannot exist due to the law of conservation of energy. this is because all mechanisms have some form of energy loss from friction, heat, light, radiation. this means that no matter how efficient a machine is you will always have some energy loss somewhere and you will always have to input more energy periodically.

Best Answer Sorry crazy8s123, but lots of things do not violate the laws of physics. The claim that bumblebees cannot fly according to the laws of physics is a myth. A nice feature of the scientific method is that if an observation cannot be explained by theory then a new one is developed.

Question Has any of the perpetual motion nay sayers ever tried it?
My son and his friend about 6 years ago for their 6th grade science project built a simple perpetual motion wheel using magnets and counter weights. It was enough to get them 3rd place in the county finals. and yes it worked, it did not produce anything other than a simple spinning wheel that spun continuously until manually stopped, over unity is another issue and thats what science investigation is about. To add more details, they did not make the cover of magazines or win a nobel prize, they along with the other contestants were mentioned in the local paper. The construction of the wheel used 2 fairly strong magnets, not the radio shack refrigerator style. The wheel took 3 days to balance before the second magnet was introduced. the bar magnets took about 2 more days to get proper alignment. Then a couple more days to re-balance the whole device, the kids worked very hard on it. No it is still not running, after the competition and they won their trophies, they were content and the friends younger brother had fun playing with it. It did run continuously for 2 days leading up to the final competition. the bar magnets were arranged so the leading edge attract the face repelled, so as the wheel spun the magnets pushed each other apart and the counter weight kept the momentum going. I appreciate all the comments, maybe we'll rename this to Magnetic Perpetual Motion Indeterminate.
